Laser Hair Reduction Q & A

How does Laser Hair Reduction work?

To understand how laser hair reduction works, it helps to think about how your hair grows. Your body is covered in millions of follicles, each of which is shaped like a tiny tunnel into the deeper layers of your skin.

At the base of each follicle sits a hair root. This root creates hair cells that stack atop one another, eventually extending out of your skin. Hair grows in three distinct cycles, only one of which is an active growth phase.

Laser hair reduction works by using concentrated beams of light to create heat within the pigment in your hair. That heat damages the hair root, preventing normal regrowth. This process is only effective during the active growth phase, so you need to come in for multiple treatments to catch hair during active growth.

The Beauty Medics team uses the GentleMax Pro® laser system from Candela®, a leader in the aesthetic laser industry.

Is laser hair reduction expensive?

At first glance, the cost of laser hair reduction might seem high. When you look at it from a different perspective, the expense is quite reasonable.

All those razors, waxing strips, depilatory creams, and trips to the salon are not free. The cost of removing unwanted hair adds up. Laser hair reduction might require a larger up-front investment, but the results last a long time.

Over time, laser hair reduction can be less costly than other options. There is also the value of time to consider. Laser hair reduction frees you from time spent shaving, waxing, or dealing with razor burn or ingrown hairs.

Is laser hair reduction a painful process?

All this talk of lasers and heat might lead you to believe that laser hair reduction is a painful process. In reality, the experience is easily tolerable for most people. Many report a sensation similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin.

Keep in mind, the laser is drawn to the pigment in your hair. After your initial visit, there will be less hair to treat, and the visits will become far more comfortable. For the vast majority of people, the minor discomfort of laser hair reduction is well worth the results.
